What is Sintered Silicon Carbide?
Sintered SiC is engineered ceramic made of silicon and carbon. Sintering is the process of fusing a powder to form a solid using heat and pressure without liquefying it.
Our process was developed to solve a problem for turbine generated power. We needed complex shapes with much higher heat tolerances and much higher wear resistance. In order to achieve these results, ACD Technologies developed a process which makes it possible to sinter silicon carbide, one of the hardest substances on earth, in a way that makes it possible to create limitless shapes while maintaining all the benefits of sintered silicon carbide. We did this in a way that greatly improves on current manufacturing processes, making manufacturing cleaner, faster, safer.
Sintered silicon carbide has been around in various forms since at least the 1970s. Indeed, the process of production has improved some through the years but there are still significant drawbacks, especially when it comes to making more complicated shapes. Typically silicon carbide is added to metals to improve strength and hardness, or nonmetallic materials are added to silicon carbide to make dimensional shapes.
Our patented process better compacts the silicon carbide powder grains for improved sintering. We use a new gel casting process with less pressure to produce a better quality product with more complex shapes and made of pure silicone carbide with no added metallic or nonmetallic compounds.
